Is there a way to play an XM plug-n-play unit through separate speakers?

Instead of piping the satellite radio through the car's speakers (which requires sharing the satellite signal with the FM station's signal, which equals lotsa static)... Can I just get a small portable speaker and plug the XM unit into it?

Or does that little satellite receiver have to go through the FM radio no matter what?

Thanks! I am soooo determined to make this XM work!
