is there a way to open chat on facebook for offline friends?

I'm trying to get info from the conversation I had with someone on facebook who is now offline. I know its still in the conversation window but I can only seem to open the window for chat with those people who are online. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Nah, if they're offline then you can't send them a message. Might as well leave a wallpost
