Is there a way to "hide" my iPhone 3G from my carrier?

My sister just gave me her old iPhone 3G having upgraded to the new one. I know that phone model information is transmitted to AT&T, allowing them to know what phone you're using and whether or not its a "smart phone" that must be under a data plan.

I simply want to use the iPhone over WiFi and have no plans of upgrading to a data plan, however, I am aware that AT&T is pretty aggressive with regards to forcing "smart phone" users into data plans.

My question is if its possible to "hide" the phone model information from AT&T, so they don't know that I'm using an iPhone 3G. I know "unlocking" the iPhone lets you use it with any carrier, but does unlocking and jailbreaking the phone prevent it from transmitting model information?

I'd really like to know if I can use this thing or not. Thanks.
