Is there a way one can raise money by bike riding across the U.S.?

My brother is planning a 3,988 mile bike ride from West Chester, PA to San Diego, California. He's in his early 30's and just knows that he needs to do this. I am trying to think of ways to help him accomplish this financially. Does anyone think it is possible to get a charity to sponsor him and where do I start? I can't personally help too much, but I thought this would be a great help if it could happen. He has no idea I'm even attempting this. Any info would help, even if it's to tell me it's a lost cause. Thanks in advance.
