Is there a way around the Tmobile smartphone plan?

Recently my phone plan got to the point where i can upgrade it so i went to the store to check out the phones they had and found out that all smart phones that you buy require a two year plan and so i called the company and they told me that if i bought a smartphone with internet and then bought another phone that doesnt require internet for its full price i wouldnt get charged for internet any longer. Then i consulted my father and called again and this time they told me that i couldnt do that so i was wondering if theyre lying to me or not can anyone help plzz
