Is there a species of lizard that can be kept outdoors as a pet?

I live in southern California. I don't want to keep it in a cage... I have a Koi pond/waterfall area and I was wondering if it would be possible to 'bond' a lizard to that area. There are lots of rocks and bugs and interesting things to play with. Would it just run away, or is there some kind of lazy lizard that wants to sit on my rocks? It also should be able to fight cats, if it wants to live for very long...

It's possible to tame some of the wild lizards by offering them attractive food and gradually approaching them, but think that by learning to trust, they'll become more vulnerable to predators, you don't want to get attached to a lizard only to see it eaten by the neighbour's dog!

Without some sort of "cage" around the area it wouldn't stick around for long. Also you have to keep in mind other predators besides cats. What about a bird of prey like a hawk coming in a grabbing him up? It's a lovely idea but I don't see it being practical.

Unless it was confined, most lizards would run away, unless the habitat was REALLY great, which I doubt.
BTW, lizards don't "play".
