...argumentation from authority? I have noticed that both sci.math and math.stackexchange both rely heavily on the fallacy of argumentation from authority (which, clearly, they do not believe to be a fallacy). My question is, do there exist math forums online which are not structured in this way. I find that these forums are terribly inefficient when attempting to critique new ideas. For example, Ken Ono recently published a paper which finally completed Euler's partition theory. Two years ago I developed some theories closely related with Ono's work, and went to sci.math, were I was ridiculed and never even given a chance to explain what I had found. I realize that mathematicians like to exclude people from what they see as "their" domain, but I cannot understand why they wouldn't at least attempt to be stimulated by new ideas. I am no crank. I have a professional BSCS degree, and I am a Master's student far beyond most other Master's students in my understanding of mathematics. My question is, why can't I get at least a little bit of respect from mathematical forums? (This is literally my question, it's not a complaint. I am seriously wondering why I can't seem to get any respect.)

Yea, I'd love to, but I don't really have the time. I'd much rather give away my ideas to a professional mathematician and have them write a paper on it if they find it interesting.
I mean, I guess, technically, I AM a professional mathematician to some degree (because CS is so closely tied with mathematics), but I mean somebody who has a Ph.D. in mathematics.

First of all, I did exactly what you said, and was still ridiculed, so apparently they are not as open-minded as you might think. Secondly, I am not saying that Appeal to Authority doesn't work in some instances, I am saying it is generally bad when applied to critiquing new ideas.
