Is there a great difference between Ford Escort s/wagon & Ford Taurus s/wagon?

I'm thinking to purchase used Ford Station wagon not older than 1995.
as I stated above is there much difference?
also is there things to watch out for about those cars? or should I just hire mechanics(they cost you know)
