given area of the brain?
Well I can add more specifically the frontal lobes. If you lose density in that area the brain volume can regrow I've been told but the amount of neurons once lost do not come back. Would any scan notice without previous results to compare to what would seem to be a dearth of neurons.
 
Really depends what you mean by a given area of the brain.

Most specific areas have arbitrary boundaries and so it is impossible to measure their exact size.

Lobes and certain areas (pituitary) can be measured using either CT or MRI with MRI being more accurate.
