Is there a better way to reliably keep your cell phone "locked"?

I recently upgraded my phone from a Motorola Razor (flip-open phone) to a Samsung 2g (slider).
With my old Razor, it never needed to lock itself since it was a flipper and wouldn't press buttons randomly by itself. With this new phone, it's been a constant hassle. It locks by itself, which is good.. and i know how to do it manually which is even better. I press "C" to lock, and "C" and "*" together to unlock.

Here's where the problem arises..

I always put my phone in my pocket when I go out and the phone didn't come with its own case, so when I receive a text/phone call/voicemail whilst its in my pocket, it cancels the "locking" process and now it's deactivated. I have sent, unintentionally, random texts of nothingness to certain people with a bunch of scribbled letters and pressed the "call' buton accidentally. Under more serious circumstances it has signed me into my mobile web browser (internet) which costs me money by the SECOND. When I receive my phone bill, I am NOT happy... these are charges that I cannot avoid!

Aside from turning off the phone altogether, is there any way to keep the "lock" feature on more reliably? I don't always feel the phone vibrating when I first get a text, or I don't have the time to quickly look at it. Either way, I have no way of re-locking it. It is simply maddening since it has logged me into weird applications that are costing me money!

HELP!
