Is the world going to end or is it a joke?

Ok, so i have been hearing a lot about 2012 being the last year or the end of the world because of the Mayan calendar ending. But WTF is this just another Y2K or is it like proven. I am sure we would have heard about it but someone give me like facts or a site that will calm my nerves...thanks in advance
