The prevailing attitude is: "How DARE you accuse blue collar Amurrica of soiling the bed it sleeps in!" It's the old "don't tread on me" anthem, and they think it's for a righteous cause, as if they don't need a predictable climate to thrive.
True scientific skepticism rarely has that belligerent tone right out of the gate. Methinks the skepticism was present long before most of them even caught a glimpse of the evidence. Everything's seen as a tax on their hard workin' existence, pushing them one step closer to some crazy anti-government act.
And they were the same way with the ozone hole, etc. This is nothing new.
