Is the truth enough to set you free, or is self-discipline needed as well?

You may be familiar with John 8:32, where it is said that the truth will set you free, but is it not also true that the Bible speaks time and time again of self-discipline, self-restraint, avoiding temptation, resisting temptation, and perseverance?

What, then, is actually making changes in the life of an addict, angry person, or sinner in general, when they convert to Christianity?

Personally, I believe it is the same function that is utilized in the Twelve Step Program - developing accountability in the form of a 'higher power', which, for some alcoholics, has not been God.

What is your explanation?
