is the toyota echo a good car ... its an 03 selling for 5000 is it a good idea?

It's a good car. More for commuting than on the hwy. Gets great mpg's. Research kbb.com for the values.

It's reliable but wouldn't pay more than $4000.

Toyota Echo is an OK car but you have to remember that this car is no longer seen on the streets that much. Meaning that people don't buy this car anymore because it was not good or reliable. But I think thats rubbish, it was an ok car but kinda small. Its an ok car for city driving for one person, good on gas, not good on performance.
The good thing about this car is that your insurance will be a little cheaper because Toyota no longer sells this cars. Buying certain cars (like Honda Prelude, Toyota Celica, Nissan 240sx) which company decides to stop making in the future and buying those cars in the future can lower your car insurance every 6 months. (sorry if that didn't make any sense)
You can also try a Yaris or a Corolla or even a Matrix if you want to.
