Is the skid plate on a Jeep Wrangler actually important?

I have a 2004 Jeep wrangler, and whenever I put the skid plate on (the thing that covers the muffler and tranfer case on the bottom of the jeep), the 4 wheel drive cuts out. instead of blowing a bunch of money for a mechanic to fix this, i want to just leave it off. is there anything wrong with this solution?
Thanks in advance!

as said before me, if you have a parking lot princess, then what does it matter, the reason its called a skid plate is because it protects the parts its covering from dents, breaking, and damage. If you go off roading (and going down a dirt alley is NOT off roading) then yes you need to leave it on, or get one that will cover each one individually so your 4WD doesn't cut out.

If its a pavement princess then no if you plan on taking it off roading yes The skid plate protects all those items you just listed
