Is the playstation 3 region free, if i bought one in america would it work in england? Is it compatible with english games?

ya....its the exact same consol axact same plugs. unless you have some weird set up then any ps3 will work for you.

For movies - no, it will only play region A
For games yes.
Getting a region A player ain't bad, I have one, about to get my second. They are superior to region B players as:
a) you get the movie earlier (earlier release date)
b) it's cheaper (usually by about 40%)
You have to import your titles from the states though, minor inconvienience in my opinion.
I'd never recommend a region B or C player to anyone.
My 2 cents.
But if you're NEVER going to play a blu-ray disc movie, and can beat around 500USD on price (buying from uk) then go for the uk version.

Don't think so, the UK uses PAL.

You need a power adaptor, but yes games will work. Not Blu Ray movies though,
