Is the Orion (nuclear) a good idea for a ship to enter Mars's orbit or is there a...

...better method (for story)? (skip to the second+third paragraphs if you don't care about the story)

Alright! So I had an idea for a Martian colonization story in the near future (designed 2040's, executed 2060's) in which the US and Europe team together to do the unthinkable, do what Bush wanted: Go the Mars (maybe that will be an actual joke...). In 2036 Russia sent a rocket there too which was mistaken for a nuclear attack and so US drops their nukes and invites the European Union into the fun. So the main idea of the story a large team (20-30) goes to Mars and lives in the premade habitat until a Russian transport meets them (it's not that simple) and shows them a huge thriving city. Then something happens that I'm not too sure of yet.

So! Orion was my original method of transportation to the Red Planet since it wasn't a large technological advance (unlike hyper sleep). But would it be possible to carry a large (1/3km long, 150m wide, 3 stories for the most part) interstellar craft to Mars when the two planets are closest together in a relatively short amount of time, a number of days or weeks, maybe months if possible?

What are other possible means of getting there for a relatively fast trip compared to traditional means such as the sling shot? Ion? Plain old O2?

I'll have more question later if you want to be cool and follow me. Or just ask about the story if you want to. I'm by no means a pro at this but I think I get this sort of thing better than anyone I know my age.
I do apologize for it's length and the likelihood that I made quiet a few mistakes, both scientifically and literately.

If you are knowledgeable with plot and such, any help you can give me is definitely appreciated. And if you think there is a hole in the plot somewhere, I might have it fixed, I thought people would get intimidated by a long paragraph.
For Ravver:
I read that the designs of those type of ships had a sort of shock absorber or something.

Another idea just hit me. A few extra g's but passengers in a drugged sleep. Would that be workable, or would the pressure wake them up?
