Is the National Endowment for the arts necessary in this financial climate?

I say no.
I'll also add that I'm a musician working towards my doctorate in music. I just think it is a joke that all these artists and musicians expect to be funded by the taxpayers when in fact the people may very well not even like the product. Why is music not a private enterprise? Why do we fund artists? And before you say, that is a tiny part of the budget, let me say, every dollar counts these days, and we need to make adjustments or the whole country is going DOWN.

160 million is nothing. I know you say every dollar counts, but you're wrong, it's not like this money is totally wasted. The artists spend it thus creating what economists call a multiplyer effect for the economy. If it makes you feel better from a conservative point of view we could simply not tax artists, the end result would probably be about the same.

Nothing except food, water, clothing and shelter are "necessary." That doesn't mean it's not worth doing.

As you said, it is a tiny part of the budget, so who cares? Raise taxes on the richest 3% to REAGAN levels and we would have a balanced budget and be able to start paying down the debt!
