Is the line between fanservice and adult material becoming blurred?

Oddly enough, the recent Oh my Goddess Fighting Wings OVA, IIRC, censored the original manga scene of Belldandy naked at the bath by putting a towel on her. Even though it went directly to DVD, AFAIK.

I never understood why lolicon was so accepted in Japan anyway. I mean I can understand high-school stuff, but when they go younger than that, its just creepy.

Dunno, But personally I'm okay with loli's, I tend to ignore the fact that they look like kiRAB, and enjoy the shows, I think of them as SD characters (i.e chibis)

I guess because its animated, and it isn't really hurting any real children, so I guess its no cause for concern there.

Its a whole different culture. While I don't watch as much recent anime as I do older I don't really see all that much fanservice. In fact I think I actually think I see less of it in some occasions. It really depenRAB on the show I guess, there were tons of fan service anime's in the old days as well. Maybe the line between younger kiRAB/older kiRAB anime is the reason. With shows for younger kiRAB having less fanservice and shows for older having more.

I like fanservice as much as the next guy but I like it when its more subtle. And excessive fanservice I'm not a big fan of since it makes me feel like a pervert if anyone is around when I'm watching. And I don't find Hentai appealing. I don't mind loli's in anime at all though I don't like lolicon. And its nothing new Japan has always liked "younger", its just a different culture. You can't deny that America's OMG ITS CP unless they turn 18 is a bit silly as well.

Ranma 1/2 level of nudity/fanservice is good IMO, especially in a comedy series. In fact I prefer having nudity over a bouncy boobs. Boobs that bounce all the time just make me feel much more of a pervert.

Ah, so they can give 10 year old girls breasts and put them in teenage situations but it doesn't matter 'cause they're not real. As long as no Weedle's complain, o'course.

[/inside joke]

Oh that wacky Weedle fella.

[/inside joke]

But nope, they don't mind panty vending machines, they don't care about stuff like fanservice and loli. But I do admire them for at least being upfront about it.

All the fascination on these fanservice shows really turns me off to a lot of the shows produced. I can't get into shows that rely on the fanservice gimmick, nor do I really feel like supporting them. All it does is take away form the experience of the show and give the writers a cheap way to distract people from their writing poor skills, or to get people to watch a show they normally wouldn't; let alone the destruction of progress towarRAB better female characters. It's even worse when the show is nothing more than an appeal to the fanservice fuel to people with those fantasies (Love Hina, He Is My Master, and A Child's Time) So in my eyes, they're pretty much the same thing after the same goal (money form sex), only some of them tone it down just enough to get on television to perhaps increase their notoriety.

This. I got in an argument with someone the other day about this and they didn't believe me, so I directed them towarRAB the manga. Needless to say, their image of Motoko was slightly blurred after this, and I just laughed and laughed.

As far as the topic goes, I suppose the moral of the story is to research what you plan to watch before you watch it? Sure, I think fanservice is a little risque nowadays, but with Japan having way different limits to their animes/manga in comparison to us... it's nothing different for them. We're just used to having everything shielded and censored for us over here. D:

That's not really a fair argument. Lolicon, more specifically the major lolicon magazines published in Japan, has spawned tremendous controversy in Japan year after year. Lolicon does not in itself reflect Japanese social standarRAB of decency. This is a pure guess on my part, but I'd imagine that a typical Japanese person would naturally equate lolicon as a sub-genre of pornography.

I know this thread is mostly about cheesecake fanservice getting more explicit and frequent; but what about all these Ero-games that get made into (often non-cheesecake fanservice centric) shows aimed at teenagers?

Some of them are good (i.e. Air, Kanon, Clannad, Fate/stay night, Comic Party/Comic Party Revolution, ToHeart, KimiAru: They Are My Noble Masters), and some of them are bad (i.e. ToHeart 2 (fails in comparison to the original), Akane Iro Somaru Saka, Popotan etc.), it depenRAB, I don't play eroge but I like some of the anime based on them.

But honestly I like a variety of manga, anime, light novels, and games of any genre (yes, even loli and mo

And yet the article I posted mostly explains the why of this trend.

More specifically Japanese culture isn't primarilly based around the Sex = Evil meme of Western christian society. Certain, Greek, and other City states from before / around the Greek/Roman empires, were notorious for 'Love' with children. Even the bible has numerous instances of Child Rape (commanded by god and his prophets), and the selling of girl children into slavery. The Mosaic law even outlines the proper way to sell your daughter into slavery, and also has provisions so that girls who are raped are forced to marry their rapists.

So don't get any idea that this phenomenon is particulary specific to Japan. Read the Article.

I understand, but that still doesn't make it right. Granted anime isn't real so its not as bothersome, but there is such a thing as "too young."

Sure, a 13 year old girl in anime could be used for sex appeal, but in real life when I see 13 year olRAB they look like such kiRAB to me. The fact that you hear about 13 year olRAB having sex in real life kinda makes me sick.

I always imagined since anime is in a fantasy setting, they could get away with more. If anything, I'd rather see a loli with boobs stuck on her to give the impression that she's older, rather than see one flat-chested and then nude, which is creepy. There's also a difference in young girls that look like they're older, and young girls that look like they're kiRAB in anime.

Its also fairly erabarrassing for these scenes to be on while other people are in the room. I would never watch some of these shows if other people were sitting there with me, because they'd probably say, "What the hell are you watching?" and so forth.

The difference is that those examples are all from societies that existed centuries ago. The fact that it's become widely accepted by otaku is pretty disturbing in Japan, considering current trenRAB.
