Is the iPhone really worth it?

Im thinking about getting rid of my T-Mobile. I have the Dash currently, and I love what it does email wise and what not. T-Mobile doesnt work in my house and because of a stupid ex-girlfriend, I have and extra line family plan with no phone that I dont really need.

When I think about cancelling that line, I feel like if Im spending that much, I might as well fix the whole situation. So is the iPhone something to consider? Or should I just bite the bullet and cancel my extra line and live with my Dash?

Im paying about $120 a month by the way only using one phone.

It amazing how many people on this forum never took basic business classes.

People, component costs != COGS on a P&L, component cost is only a portion of COGS. Look it up. The purpose of an Isuppli teardown is strictly to look at relative component costs for manufacturers to evaluate if their component/package designs could be further optimized. Isuppli teardowns DO NOT indicate actual profit margin on a particular device. Thinking it does, or more importantly, POSTING that it does just makes you look like a complete douche.

Other things that impact profit margin:

Manufacturing (including tooling costs, labor and inventory/DSO)
Foreign currency exchange (paying manufacturing and shipping suppliers in other countries)
Shipping and freight costs
Customs fees
Taxes
Domestic logistics and warehousing
R&D (remember that the iPhone was in development for 2 years and not generating revenue)
Marketing and advertising
Retail overhead (sales displays, sales rep training, etc)
And then there is the margin split with distributor partners (AT&T)

If anyone really thinks that there is $350 worth of gravy money in every iPhone, they obviously don't know a goddamn thing about business.

You should buy a Nokia N95 instead. It is a superior smartphone with 2 cameras -- one for vid conferencing and a main Carl Zeiss 5 megapixel camera. Plus it plays every media file-format in existence.

Yes it is worth it..The internet is amazing on this phone. .You will not find a better phone with Internet than the Iphone.. You get REAL INTERNET, not that Mobile Internet non-sense.

Your right, there's a markup on everything, i do realize that. Having worked at an electronics retailer a while back a saw that firsthand. I was blabbin about the iphone and with my inherent dislike for the device i made a comment a 5th grader would've made.

i did take a business class actually, a very long time ago and i still don't know a goddman thing about business

regardless of looking like a douche and my markup comment being an invalid point, i still think the iphone isn't worth it.

I got 2 last night, only activated the wifes though....I wanted to see if I'd be ditching my Nokia E65 for it (which I will). The iphone is one of the few things out there that lives up to its hype.

fuck this thread is making me want an iPhone. Went into the Apple Store to buy today, changed my mind at last second. Still back and forth on it, but looks like I may be heading back tomorrow to pick it up
