Is the unlocked HTC Hero a good phone? And if I buy that unlocked and pop my existing AT&T sim card in there, would I still HAVE to buy the AT&T data plan? currently I use an old Nokia 6030. I used the iPhone sometime and now I wanted to try something different

Looks like the Hero was mostly available in the UK market and Sprint launched it in the American market. Would there be any difference in service with the unlocked version?
I do not want to buy the data plan coz most places I am at have wifi!
