Today I had to stop to put water in my car for the 7th day in a row. I know, I have a leak, right now just putting water in seems to be keeping that problem at bay. That however is not my question, but I'm wondering if the two are related. After I got started again, I noticed when I turned the car on it made a noise, like it hummed for a second. Not a good description, but the engine has never made this noise before, the sound stopped and I got headed back out onto Highway 30. Just a few minutes later, I was doing 60 and went to step on the gas, the car shuddered (best description I can think of) I let off the gas and was going down hill so he stayed at 60, I was curious so I repeated my actions and got the same result, I did it a third time, again shuddered, then the check engine light came on and I was able to accelerate as usual. The check engine light just sat there staring at me. My oil change is a little past due and is scheduled for tomorrow, I think it's leaking oil too, but not sure. Boyfriend said it sounds like it could start with the fuel system. I have to drive 16 miles at 2 a m, I can't afford to get stranded with two small kids.
Update: Went out to car. Started him up, moved him to a different parking spot. Then I opened the hood and there was a strong odor of gas. The check engine light didn't come on before I turned him back off. I checked the oil (yes, I know, I'm supposed to check before I start) It is REALLY low, shouldn't be that low. Adding a quart tonight when I double check it after sitting a while. Oil change will be done first thing tomorrow. How would I check a head gasket, if I could afford a mechanic I would have one, this is all DIY auto mechanics I'm working with right now. Please, don't tell me I don't deserve a car if I can't afford a car or anything like that. We're just getting straightened out. And thanks to the person who suggested the egg, I knew about that, but kinda forgot about it until you mentioned it. I know where the leak is, and I know I need coolant, have cats around apt I didn't want to kill when it all leaked out. Thanks again to everyone who answered and is about to answer.
Car hasn't had antifreeze all summer. June replaced some hoses in back of engine for water leak and August replaced Water pump after adding water constantly for 2 months. Smell is coming from back of engine, but not left or right and I believe I'm seeing white smoke or what looks like white smoke come off after starting it and running for less than a minute.
Just ran my finger in the tail pipe, it feels like smooth soot.
