Is the army in [Turkish Rpublic] Northen Cyprus the same as in Turkey?

What are the conditions? Like when do soldiers get leave? My boyfriend will go to the army on monday and he says he will only be able to get out once or twice every couple months.
And they can't use their phones?
Is it like that?
