Is the AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz overkill to play todays games?

I am building a Gaming PC for Christmas and have asked for parts and accessories for my new rig from everyone I know. I am buying my own processor and motherboard however and would like to stick with an AMD setup, I would like to play "todays" games (i.e. Call of Duty: Black Ops, Medal of Honor 2010, Battlefield Play 4 Free, Crysis 2, etc.) and was wondering what a good, decently priced AMD processor would be to play these games on Maximum settings, is the AMD Phenom ii X6 Black Edition ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103849 ) overkill? Is a Quad-Core acceptable to run these games? Any input would be appreciated, thank you
