Is teaching about onset and rime a good strategy to help children decode unknown words when reading?

I have a few students who are fine with high frequency words but struggle when they get to words like spiked or shouted. I was think of developing a lesson for them which concentrates on the sounds eg. sp/iked and sh/outed
Do you think this is a good strategy?
