Is taking chemistry a 100% necessity in becoming a zoologist/wildlife biologist?

I want to become a zoologist/wildlife biologist and have started gr.11.

The problem is that I can't take chemistry because I KNOW I will fail. I can not explain to you fully why, but my brain does not want to be capable of learning this.

The past 2 years, (year 9 and year 10), I have had science teachers who do not teach properly, therefore, no matter how much I wanted to understand, I couldn't.

I am scared that because of them I will not be able to become what I have always wanted to.

Does anyone with experience out there know if I have to take chemistry (and physics too)?

Can't say I have that experience you mentioned about. But, I do know of a similar situation. I guess I must have had a bad teacher in h.s., because I hated math and barely passed Algebra. I'm forced to go back to school to pursue a different career. Anyway, I did not pass the math part of my entrance exam to my college. I got this set of Algebra dvds and it is like I'm seeing this stuff for the first time and I am getting it! I can only deduct that my teacher must have been holding me back.

Maybe it is something similar for yourself. Try to teach yourself through some stuff at the library. Find friends or other family members that understand chemistry. Do that before you pay for a tutor. But if that is necessary, then you may have to do that too. I feel your pain hon. I had to take philosophy classes and other somewhat unrelated stuff for my computer degree. IF I want my degree, I guess I have to endure these things. I hope you get what you need for that Sweetheart! ;)

Sooner or later, you will have to take both courses. You may need more than the basic course as well. If your teachers can't teach, you will have to learn on your own. No excuse will be accepted.

I suppose it technically depends on your place of study. However, I can assure you that at some point in your career you will have to have a basic knowledge of both chemistry and physics. This is necessary knowledge that will give you insight into ecosystem interactions.

I was a biological sciences major but changed to wildlife ecology (both at LSU). I was required to take both chemistry and physics in each program of study.

I did biology degrees and didnt do chemistry.

Both chemistry and physics are very useful but its not a big problem if you dont do either. There are loads of different aspects of zoology you can just focus on the non chemistry parts.

Don't worry I was in the same boat as you a few years back. I graduated high school and the only science I did was Biology. I had to take a bunch of upgrading courses and Chemistry at a outreach school before going to university. University of Calgary the school I go to only requires 2 of the 3 sciences, I used Biology and Chemistry, I suck at physics, and math which is another requirement. I don't have Physics for high school. I just studied my ass off looked up every dam answer for every assignment, got lots of help and did well. I sucked terribly at Chemistry, and pulled off a 80% in high school in it, just studying like crazy. Hell I even sucked at Biology. Though Biology in High school focused purely on the human body, none of which I cared about. After getting into University based purely on every class but Biology, because I was then doing school work more focused on what I wanted to to which was with animals or later use to acheive my goal, which is a zoologist with a Phd I got extremely good at all my classes simply because I was strivng to acheive what I desired. I knew so much about wildlife and nature before I even went to University, I read every book, watched Planet earth allot, read lots of research papers done by actual scientists in the field.
Don't give up, if I did I wouldn't be in University right now completing my goal.

I have a degree in zoology and work as a wildlife biologist and have always been terrible at math and chemistry. And YES, you will have to take both chemistry and physics to get a zoology degree. Actually you will have to take several chemistry classes and a couple physics courses. I did struggle through these courses, but it can be done!! You will probably want to get a tutor and maybe attend homework labs if your university has them or form a study group with other students in your class so that you can help and teach each other. Sometimes learning from other students makes a lot more sense than learning from the professors. If you REALLY want to have this career, I say don't let chemistry stop you. You can't give up before you even start. With that attitude you will probably not get far in life no matter what you do.
