Is starting solids the new breast/formula debate?

Just wondering about this. I answered a question regarding a mom whose 4 month old seems to be ready for solids. So I answered the question according to my own experience as a mom. Sounds easy, right? So far, I've gotten at least 3 thumbs down. Well, apparently, starting earlier than 6 months is considered "bad". My children are now 10 and 8. They're fine, nothing terrible happened to them because they started eating solids at 4 months.

Breastfeeding vs formula feeding
SAHM vs Working moms

Do we really need another battlefield?
Ooh, now it's up to 4 thumbs down. lol
I like the way you think (even if you are a Yankees fan) ;)

I think it's just that new studies all indicate starting before 6 mths has no benefits it's unnecessary, so why bother, why risk the harm it could do, as for breastfeeding/formula it's not quite the same, no one is forced to start solids early due to bad latch/poor milk supply/taking meds etc. SAHM/Working moms, some dont have a choice, some need to work for the money, others cant because they have no one to watch their kids, some opt for one or the other, not sure if there is a right way.

I started my boys on rice cereal when they were 4 months old and went from there. They're 5 and 4 now (respectively) and are healthy as horses, no food or medication allergies, tall/strong, and good eaters.

You're getting thumbs down from the women who think you should breastfeed your child until he's at least 8 or 9 years old, grow your own organic vegetables, grind them yourself, and refuse to feed your baby meat. God forbid you should give them Gerber Ham from a jar. The HORRORS!!?!?!

God forbid you feed your child solids before they're a year old (or 8 months or 6, or whatever the hell it is). They'll be fat! They'll be lazy! Studies have proven this and this! Yeah well look at all the other studies done by experts over the years (and I don't just mean childhood related studies, but ALL studies) where they come back 5, 7, 10 years later and say, "Oh yeah...heh heh. Remember 10 years ago when we told you eggs were bad for you? Well, we were wrong...eggs are great for you!" That's just one of MANY.

I get thumbs down all the time I could care less.

(and both my boys started solids before 6 months!)

**They don't even recommend starting with cereal anymore they say you can start with cereal, fruits or veggies** (Source: My child's pediatrician - both my boys started with fruits and veggies never even ate cereal)

I started my son at 4 months.
He now eats mostly what we eat, except the normal allergy foods.
Makes life pretty easy when I see what my friends are feeding their kids.
I can go to a restaurant and order a hard boiled egg ( for the yolk) and piece of dry toast for my man. I am not fishing threw the diaper bag for puree's! My son is 8 month's old and my friend with a 11 month old is still looking at jarred foods.

Don't forget about the terrible comments many people here make re the Cry it out, or Ferber method!

Ps According to my baby book I was fed applesauce at 6 weeks. I lived.

Who cares? I got several thumbs down on that question too. What people don't seem to realize is that they were probably fed cereal well before 6 months. Do you all have terrible digestive problems now? Are you all obese because you were fed cereal as a child or is it because you're lazy and eat at McDonald's three times a week? And if my doctor and I agree who are you to tell me I'm wrong?

By the way I didn't start my son on cereal, I started him on pears. What does the research say about that???

LOL. What question is it?

It doesn't matter what you do with your children, you will get crap about it! I just ignore it, I do what I feel is right for my daughter. I love getting advice from other mothers, and I love giving advice if I can!
