is self defense an excuse for murder. explain thoroughly please...using this for debate?

i need to have reason and some examples why self defense is not an excuse for murder
uh...thanks, but i need reasons why its not lawful.
thanks some random dude....what i meant was : i know its not unlawful, but how is it immoral..

like ex:you don't need to shoot your attacker ten times in the chest and head to defend yourself
 
Do you want to get into religion with this debate? The reason I ask is that I know a person who would not kill anyone, even in self defense and even if her children or family were going to be killed. This is what she says: "In the ten commandments, it says Thou Shalt Not Commit Murder. It does not say Thou Shalt Not Commit Murder, unless you are about to be murdered and then it is self-defense." Her view is that when its your time to go, its just your time to go. She does have a point, but I'd still do it if someone was harming me or my family and friends. But there are people out there that think its never right to murder, no matter what.
