Is religion choice an informed decision by or a product of environment?

Most children are taught by the reward or punishment method. Therefore, fear rules their every decision. A very lucky few are allowed to experience and decide on their own.
 
I think you're a product of your environment (religion wise) in the beginning. Then, as you get older some may change their minds. My boyfriend starting researching & basically thinking when he was a teenager, but I started when I was 22 so it all depends on when. But, at the same token, some people dont ever begin to really think for themselves.
 
Whether it is the caveman who believed in a higher power because of some of event he couldn't explain or someone who instinctively believes in a higher power, the belief in a higher power is as old as the human race. Nor can it ever be extinguished.
 
Most people it is the later.

I have family that is JW's because other family members are.
I know people who are Catholic because they wanted to marry someone.
Mormons like the ring of being a sex god.
Muslims like to get virgins.

Even Christians will just follow the lead into a bad doctrine or denomination.

Jesus is not a religion, but He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the Light of the World.
 
There comes a time in most peoples life that they make their own choices.

To blame mama and daddy is juvenile.
 
If kids are raised in cult like environment, not left to think for themselves, then it is a product of their environment because they were not allowed think any way else. But if kids were brought up with no religion or liberal religion, most will make their own choices later in life, as adults.
 
If you are ignorant then you can chose, however if you are logical, belief is not a choice, it comes from rationality. A person who choses atheism is not as intelligent as someone who believes Christianity because of rationality and vice versa.
 
I see it as child abuse when children are indoctrinated before they are able to logically Access what they are being told.
