Is "Progress" the new dominant faith?

I recently read a book where the author stated that "Human Progress" was actually the dominant religious faith in industrialized culture, that both atheist and theist alike blindly followed regardless of proof or evidence to the contrary.

His opinion was that both atheist and theist alike will generally respond violently to any suggestion that continued human industrialized progress is a myth.

What do you think ?

Is there some validity to this statement ?

So I suppose there's no evidence of progress since the middle ages, is that right? Progress is just a myth and it never happened, correct?

I am having difficulty believing you for a moment believe that there's any doubt that humanity has progressed greatly in the last 1000 and especially the last 300 years.

i personally have a lot of difficulty wrapping my mind around that concept. is the position that lives will be better and longer because of technoloogy? i don't know anyone that would get violent over the subject.
