I recently read a book where the author stated that "Human Progress" was actually the dominant religious faith in industrialized culture, that both atheist and theist alike blindly followed regardless of proof or evidence to the contrary.
His opinion was that both atheist and theist alike will generally respond violently to any suggestion that continued human progress is a myth.
