Is prior military service needed for a president aka Commander in Chief?

I want to know if prior military service is needed for a president to be a good commander in chief. I have read some answers on this topic that say that some of our best presidents haven't served but when I think of the men most associated with being good presidents: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Ronald Reagan, I see that they were all in the military. I also see people like Bill Clinton, who did not serve, reduced the size of the military leaving us weaker when we needed to be strong.

I am unsure and would love to hear everybody's opinons on the topic.

The first thing I thought of when I read "I want to know if prior military service is needed for a president to be a good commander in chief." is yeah Tricky Dick Nixon was an awesome leader...and liar...and cheater..

Military service doesn't make a huge difference, most presidents were officers so they only know "that side" of the military experience anyway.

Nope. A lot of them haven't. It does help though, because they understand better what they are ordering the troops to go through.

FDR served our country from a wheelchair, though he hid it from the media back then.

Military service is not needed and would in effect bar a competent person with a physical disability from being President.

And that would be discrimination.

Why would he need prior service experience to make a good commander in chief? He does not run the military. He has many generals and advisers who do that for him.

The president also does not have FBI, CIA, ATF, DEA, NASA, etc etc experience and he runs those agencies also.
