Everyone seems to like the same things from the 50s-90s. Very few new things are popular. Some exceptions would be Lost, The Office, and Coldplay.

The fact that The Simpsons (began in 1989!), South Park (began in 1997), and Spongebob (began in 1999), are still very current and hot shows, and people call Nirvana "new rock" ... and it's almost 20 years old!
 
Just to the question 'is pop culture dead?'. Obviously not.
Pop culture just refers to *popular* culture. As long as something is popular it fits into the 'pop culture' category. They don't need to be new.
 
Not really, alot of stuff is "retro" now and goes back to the good ol' 80's....Ray-Bans, Day-Glo colors, leggings and biker shorts, a LOT
 
Well, if we'd stop trying to keep it alive with reality tv, I think we'd be better off
