Is PHP and MySQL as powerful as ASP.NET and SQL Server?

PHP will always be a better choice because it is not at the whim of one company, it's continued support and existence is almost guaranteed. Closed formats have a limited life cycle, the tools required to develop with them are often not cheap either.

Why on earth Microsoft feel the need to constantly re-invent the wheel is beyond me.

I would just like to know if PHP and MySQL are as capable as ASP.NET is. I like both equally but guess I prefer PHP because it is open source and means there is more software to edit in, without the fear that Microsoft are going to drop the Web Developer Express Edition and leave me with knowledge but no tools to build websites in. I have a bit of knowledge of both languages (VB for ASP.NET) and am interested to know which is more powerful or advantageous.

This is a contentious debate.

My opinion is that the architecture you use is only as powerful as your understanding of it

I prefer asp.net as the support (to me) seems far better and visual studio if you purchase the full version gives you a lot of options both in terms of languages and projects. SQL Server V's mySQL. I don't have any preference either way but tend to use SQL Server.

Not sure if you are aware or not but you are eligible for upgrade pricing on Visual Studio if you are a registered express version user. Meaning Visual Studio would be about £150. Which given the breadth of the program is a steal.

Lets see if I get the thumbs down for going ASP over PHP. I reckon 5. Lets see!!
