A cape is an island protruding to the sea/ocean. And since the form of Palawan is exactly like that, the main island protruding to the sea/ocean and away from the main island of the Philippines. By the way, it the Bulacan region, areas like capes, are referred to as :Lungos, although some people also called it Tangos, which literally means like a long nose.
@fizz - The dictionary gives the meaning of the word "Cape" as a piece of land projecting into a body of water; promontory; headland. Nothing is said that the land should be attached to the mainland. Palawan is an island and also a Cape.
