When we got him at 11 weeks, he bit us A LOT when playing and when we touched him. So we did all the things the books and internet said and it sort of worked very slowly. Now he is 4.5 months and he bites less and not hard, we no longer have scratches and bite marks and he doesnt bite or attack our legs anymore. However, he still likes to mouth us (unless he's very very tired and is about to fall alseep) you can't play any running or wrestling games with him or he'll bite, snap, jump at your face and growl. he still shows his teeth and scrunch up his nose when we tell him off for nipping, he'd roll onto his back as a sign of submission i think but at the same time he's showing his teeth. He just loves to mouth your hand. Everytime he bites me i hold my thumb under his tongue (the only technique that seemed to work ) and he'd stop, but often he'd show his teeth and pretends to snap at my hand but actually avoiding my hand.
He is not protective over his food, unless its something really really delicious, in which case if you try to touch the treat, he just growls lowly and eventually runs away with the food. As for toys, he growls at my 11 year old sister when she touches the toy or him when he's playing with it, but he does not do this with me.
When he bites me and i say NO or anything like that, it seems to make it worse. Perhaps it is because he's so used to me saying NO or DONT.
He often goes nuts and jumps all over my arm (when im sitting down on the floor) and tries to go at my face a lot, he also occasionally tries to hump my arm and leg! He should know that we are alpha, we always eat before him, make him earn his food and treats by doing commands, we walk through doors and such before him etc etc.
He is a japanese spitz male, and he gets walked once a day, he has a large garden and house to run around in and he is house broken. He's not aggressive at all when you pick him up and walk around, in fact he's very very happy. He's scared of all other dogs small or big and some humans too, he tries very hard to run from them if they come at him or bark at him. However at home, if he sees someone moving outside the fence he'll bark and growl at them.
What worries me is that most owners have never even seen their dogs show their teeth or growl like this, is there something wrong with him? He's not that destructive, he bites a few furniture corners but he mostly plays with his own toys. The vet doesn't seem to see anything wrong with him but that's because when we take him outdoors, he's on his best behavior! He's so distracted by everything (and a bit scared) that you'd mistaken him for the sweetest little thing.
