Hello guys

Im a new owner of a sumeri fish (sorry don't know how to spell) You know the one with the beautiful colours and long fins. He/she has blue and bits of green.

I have had him/her since December everything going well changing water once a week. Doing the treatments in the water and adding a toner that keeps him at top shape.

I just want to know one thing? Is it normal for him to not swim around like normal fish? Im quite serious when i say he only moves when i feed him!!!

Should i get another fish to go with him? Obviously i cant get the same kind because i dont want them to fight to the death but like a goldfish or something. Will he get more energetic when he has a "friend" in the bowl with him?

I do have a plant in their for him and planning on getting a ornament for him when i get paid so what you think?

Sometimes i have to tap in order to see if he is still alive
:( shame!
Wow! The pet shop owners didnt even tell me about this heater!!! Will have to go shopping thanks guys!

No, this is not normal! I'm assuming you have a betta, AKA"samurai" fish, AKA siamese fighting fish.

A happy, healthy betta will swim around almost constantly, only occasionally stopping to rest or hide out in a cave.

Do you have a heater in your tank? Bettas are very sensitive to temp problems and need to be at about 78 degrees to thrive. The tank should be kept far away from windows, heaters or A/C that could cause temp changes.

Ideally a betta should be kept in a 5 gallon tank with a filter (not too strong, though, can suck their long fins in and hurt them!), natural gravel, a heater, live plants (plastic ones can hurt them) and some kind of "cave" decoration to hide out in.

If you decide to get him a tankmate, I would NOT get a goldfish. Goldfish are notoriously dirty and require a really big tank in order not to poison all the other fish with their waste. Personally I find the best tankmates for a betta are cory catfish. Bonus: cories are VERY active and fun to watch. BUT: Do be prepared, there is a possibility that your betta won't like having neighbors and that you will have to return the cories or put them in a separate tank.

Your talking about a siamese fighting fish or a betta which is the more popular name. But for the most part bettas when in a bowl will just sit there inactive. They usually just sit at the top of the water because they get there oxygen from the air unlike most fish who gets it from the water. Bettas will not move unless they have to. And don't put another fish in there because the bowl will get to dirty with more than one fish in it. He will be fine, its just what bettas usually do.
