I feed him 2 pellets in the morning and 2 at night everyday. He eats the pellets pretty quickly (sometimes he even jumps a little to get it before it hits the water). Whenever I look at the tank he swims up to me and swims really fast to the surface, like he is expecting more food. Is he actually hungry or does he just think I'm going to feed him? I don't want to overfeed him so how much should I be feeding him a day so he won't get sick but he won't be hungry either??

I feed mine around 3-4 twice a day. Both of my betas do the same thing, swims up to me and looks like they are expecting more too.

They are greedy little beggers but their stomach's are actually pretty tiny and overfeeding can lead to all sorts of problems, including fatal ones.

Yes he'll beg for food but don't give in! The regime you have is fine, in fact I would recommend skipping a day entirely once a week, it will do him good, and occasionally supplementing with live/frozen food instead such as bloodworm.

You can tell when they've eaten well as their bellies will become quite obviously a bit bigger! As long as it's back to normal within 12 hours and they've had a good poop then that's fine! If you're worried about them becoming constipated (easily done with dried foods) feed a little cooked de-shelled pea and no food for a day or two, it acts like a fishy laxative and will clear out the system.
