is Lucky Star derivative?

I wouldn't say Lucky Star is a rip-off, just another variation of the slice-of-life style of anime involving high school girls. If anything, Lucky Star and AzuDai are distant cousins. AzuDai is the whimsical, flighty, wide-eyed one while Lucky Star is the rather down-to-earth, more streetsmart, esoteric, one.

Although seriously, I don't see much AzuDai AMVs compared to Lucky Star ones. I mean... do you see the amount of NicoNico videos involving Lucky Star characters singing to the tune of various Nintendo themes? Where are all the AzuDai ones? Let alone, the dancing, the Haruhi connection and so forth. There's something just... memetastic about Lucky Star that makes it more AMV and video inclined than AzuDai.

And c'mon, when it comes to AzuDai AMVs, Waka Laka for Osaka

There was a Kirby of the Stars parody of the Azumanga Daioh OP, as well as an Ace Attorney one.

Never did like Hare Hare Yukai nor Motteke! Sailor Fuku. I can't believe someone did a parody or both using sprites from Rockman.

Also, neither has reach the amount as...(shudders)... ...Carmelldansen.

What about these 3 anime/manga:

Hidamari Sketch
GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class
Sketcrabroadook

They're all about art class, and I even thought that the last 2 shows ripped off Hidamari Sketch.

If anyone's offended, please don't be. Whilst I obviously thought about what I was saying, it certainly wasn't an attempt to rabble rouse. Just a simple general opinion that I find Azumanga to be overrated.

Fair enough, though it should be noted that not everyone who likes Azumanga thinks it's the most "hilarious show ever". Some like the easy-going slice of life aspect to it, and that despite the silly, loopy nature of it, you really do care about the characters by the end of it.
...I'm not following.

Just for those that jumped over my post three days ago, I will re-post it.

It is as much of a rip off as Yugioh is to Pokemon. At first glance, with no knowledge of either show, they look alike, but after learning about them, no similarities exist that can call it a rip off

Honestly. I don't blame you, theres Times I hate it just as much as I love it as well, then I remeber all the Great shows it has had over the years, G-force, Voltron, Gundam, Dragonball/DBZ, Dr.Slump. Tecnhi, Kenshin, Case Closed, Slayers, Etc.

Given thats all old stuff, but I think its still good even by today's standereRAB, But I must admit There's many newer anime (ones from the past 3-4 years or so.) That I find fairly easy to dislike, I honestly think Anime has gone downhill abit, Not nearly as much as NA toons, but a bit.

(Retro Anime for the World!)

There's crap back then as there's crap now. Nostalgia's a real kicker.

And please use "anime" as a median, not a genre. House =/= Lost, Cowboy Bebop =/= Gaogaigar.

1. I wish People would quite using Nostalgia on me, THERE WERE SHOWS BACK THEN BOTH LIVE ACTION & ANIMTED THAT ARE BETTER THEN MODERN SHOWS! Given there are also a decent amount of bad show back in the day as well, but Still Even comparing 2 simmilar shows like say somthing old like Slayers to somthing Newer like say Claymore, both wich are shows that I love I can honestly Say Slayers is a little better, because theres more Balance, Claymore is awsome but its so serious at times its overwhellming, whereas Slayers is balanced between dark & light hearted moments.

And again even though nostalgioa does play a part, I sitll think Overall Older Anime (Like Older toons) Are more enjoyable to watch.

2. Sorry my bad I guess I should use it as a median instead of a genre.

well they do have some simmalariteis both are in a medevilish setting, both are about hero's that fight monsters, both have a female lead. the only big diffrence, besides the overall story, is that one is alot more serious then the other.

B) Nostalgia may be general, but that doesn't mean its not right sometimes, I mean there are Good & bad shows in every era & there are some older shows better then modern shows & Vice Versa.

Back on topic however, I personally Think both Azu-manga Dia-oh & Lucky star are mostly hype, Even though I can find enjoyable qualities in the 2 neither are really as good as there hyped up to be. and again I don't think LS is a rip-off just simmialr in some ways. (like Pokemon & Digimon, 2 simmilar yet diffrent series.)

When it comes to that, there's two things to consider:

1. This was mostly the editors of Shounen Magazine's fault than Ken Akamatsu's fault (given how the editors wanted him to write a harem-style story with a boy wizard as the male lead).

2. At least Ken is putting effort into the story to ensure that it's more than a Harry Potter ripoff.

This thread went absolutely nowhere.

Anyway, in a misguided attempt to interject a little depth into this (against my urges to just close it,) I'll note the following:

The execution between the two shows is radically different. Azumanga gets at it humor and drama almost exclusively through the setting and characters - references and parody are never really brought into the mix. Lucky Star thrives on the fact that it's self-aware (so much so that the fact certain VAs are referencing a given show is a layer of the humor,) and thus references play a key role in the show from start to finish. In fact, it's as Lucky Star gets more parody driven that it gets funnier.

However, it's amusing that people worry about certain character types being shared between the shows, as one could probably look at anything in the modern anime scene and see that character archetypes haven't been this static since before Evangelion, so it's really not the fault of the program if certain character elements seem lifted wholesale. The fact is that the majority of otaku-centric titles (which Azu and Lucky fall under,) have become geared around marketing a set of tropes, and that maybe a trend we are saddled with for a while. Loli, Tsundere, etc - they are going to be wedged in things as long as that's profitable, and with 30 percent of middle-age Japanese men single virgin, those escapist tropes may be here for a generation. Get used to a lot of Konatas and Yuis and Chiyos and so on.
