Is leaving your car running while you are not in it against the law?

I was having a conversation with this person about their car running while they are not in it. Is it still against the law to have your car runnign while you are not in it even if it starts up automatically with your alarm? Does it matter what state you are in?
 
It very much depends on what state you are in, some states make it a ticketable offense to leave the keys in the vehicle let alone leave it running unattended
