is it worth it to buy a 1997 Jeep grand cherokee w/ 147k for $300.00 dollars (plus towing)? It needs a "transmission overhaul" but I would do that this summer when I can save the money. Is it worth it for me to buy this? Also how much would an overhaul cost? I have a guy who could probably discount the labor involved and could probably find me a cheap transmission as well as he is a mechanic and owns his own shop.
when I say that I will be waiting to the summer, I mean that I will store it at my summer house and not drive it until I get it fixed

$300 ia a good deal. I would buy it for sure.
You can get a used transmission at a junk yard for $300 and be in the car $600. Not too bad! If it has the 4.2, it is good for 300,000 miles
To have a shop rebuild the transmission it will cost about $1200.

As long as engine is in GREAT condition.
300 is what I sold a suv to the junk yard for last year.
You can get a used trans from the junk for not much.
All together you will prob end up with the 300 plus 700 = $1000 in it.
I would ONLY do it if you KNEW the eng and all the elec and suspension systems were all in good working order. A jeep w 147,000 could be have other probs. And they dont get great MPG. Jeep is not my fav brand as far as reliability.

Google "edmonds.com " to see what it is worth in running condition.
