Hi Anabelle, no it's what is known as going Dutch, paying half shares to stop exactly what yo say happening, and there is nothing wrong with it either, as long as you make sure the guy knows at the start of the evening.

When I go on a first date I always insist that I pay for my half. It's my way of ensuring no emotional blackmail at the end of the evening in that I won't sleep witha guy or even kiss him, just because he's spent money on me. If I want to at the end of the evening I will, otherwise I can walk away without any guilt that he's shelled out 50 bucks on dinner and a movie etc.

If things go further I'll usually go for he pays for a date, and I'll get the next one, but only after I know I'm interested. I just hate the idea that getting to know a guy means him spending his money on me... but a few have said I'm acting too butch feminist... any thoughts?

omgsh your not to butch feminist at all! This is completely normal and understandable and i do it too. Its called just simply being formal and nothing is unbalanced beetween you.
Its up to you, you have to take control.
Morals are important, and i am glad people like you and i have the right kinda standards, to get the right kind of man!
