Is it unusual to consciously talk during sleep paralysis?

Recently while "sleeping," I've managed to hold conversations (that I can actually remember) with my girlfriend while at the same time either dreaming or possibly hallucinating. During this time I am also unable to move and usually unable to enunciate words with my tongue. After spending time reading resources online, it sounds to me as if I have had sleep paralysis for about 10-15 years.

To sum up what usually happens: I realize that I'm dreaming when I'm asleep and I either manage to control my dream or I immediately begin to wake up. When I begin waking up, I usually try to move but cannot do so. Recently, I was shocked when I woke up unable to move but somehow managed to talk to my girlfriend without the use of my tongue. She actually understood what I was saying: "Shake me, I can't wake up," and she asked me questions like "what do you see" and "can you feel me grabbing your arm?"

When I finally woke up, she was holding me and I asked if the conversation was real--she said it was. We have now managed to talk while I'm in this condition about 4 times in the last couple months.

QUESTION: Is it out of the ordinary to consciously talk during sleep paralysis and should I be concerned? My girlfriend and I find this fascinating and I'd be lying if I didn't admit that "Inception" got me thinking about it more. I would of course appreciate any citations and I will be asking a doctor once I have the opportunity.
