is it true that having a cyst can affect over the counter pregnancy test results?

I heard that from a friend, i dont know if this is a proven fact?
I had a very light period last month, like really hardly anything (on birth control) but this past week i have been hurting like pain inside (around the bellybutton area) and sometimes to where i have to be on my stomach in order for it to feel better? does anyone have an idea...?
