Is It True That For A Criminal Case The Judge Can Overthrow A Guilty Verdict?

I heard that even if a jury finds someone guilty the judge REALLY has the final say and can choose to over-throw the verdict. Is that true?

Also, a judge cannot over-throw a not guilty verdict right?
