Is It True That Anything Discussed In Confessions Stays Secret, Even Criminal Action?

I'm asking because I know of a church that is mainly Latino and the priest is known for trying to prevent kids from joining gangs and what not...

If under confession let's say one of the kids discusses unsolved gang crime incidents, or murders that are about to happen; the priest cannot reveal any of that info to the authorities?

From what I understand there is no exceptions according to the Church on breaking the seal of confession. Does this hold true even with information that someone's going to be killed?

A catholic priest cannot divulge ANY information he receives by act of confession. If he did he would be removed from the priesthood and possibly excommunicated. Most priests would never even think of doing such a thing, they take it very, very seriously

No exceptions, priest gets an automatic sentence to hell if he reveals anyone's confession. It's a policy of the Catholic church.

He is to keep his mouth shut no matter how bad the confession is. It is the religion and they can get away with it. I am catholic and I have asked my priest about this actually.

yes its no different then a psychiatrist .....they have to keep it confidence ...ad if you were gonna kill someone you wouldn't be confessing because you hadn't commited the sin yet

I think it is supposed to stay confidential but in reality it probably is not always the case.

We are told to confess our sins to God. This can be done privately in our own room. No need for a third party for confession. You might appreciate a third party for advice on subjects to do with sins committed but fine details don't need to be given then.

A priest has to tell the authorities if someone comes to them and confesses a crime like murder.

I would emagine the preist himself could try and stop that person from getting killed but no they can't tell anyone otherwise the amount of gossip going around church would be unfathomable

(:

Yes, but if you go to confession and tell the priest this, the priest might say, you have to tell the police for your penance. If this is true and you don't your confession was for not.for we are under obligation to carry out our penance. How ever a priest,( if it hasn't happened yet), can warn the police of something that might take place. He doesn't have to revel the source, but if it happens, he can be hauled in for questioning and be held accountable for it. Tough question, and tough answer. But he is never suppose to revel where and who he heard it from, if it was confessed. God bless you.

I know in my church, if someone confesses to something illegal it is the obligation of the Bishop (like a priest....sorta) to report it to the authorities.

I don't think they are supposed to carry this to the extent that it may break the law.
