is it to weird to ask your friend for a promise ring for your birthday?

I've been friends with my guy friend for almost a year now and we've always kinda had a thing..
No matter what we say neither of us can ever help not hooking up when we get near each other.
its impossible, but anyways.. my bday is in 2 months and i really want a ring from him.
is it to weird to ask him for one?
 
To be honest, yeah. and here's why. If you guys don't have a commitment with each other and you guys don't hook up then lets say he gets you this ring and dates another girl cause technically you guys are not together and your going to have this promise ring that is going to mean absolutely nothing. Its like making a home run without going to base 1, 2, or 3. It just doesn't happen like that. It can only destroy you in the long run. Maybe if you built a relationship with this guy and then later on down the road asked for one when you guys were comfortable with each other then it would be another ball game.
 
it's more pathetic to ask your friend to buy you a gift for your birthday unless he/she asked what you want. what's the promise for?
