...child when you're in your 70s? When my grandfather was about 10 years old he ran out into the street one icy winter. There were very few cars on the road back then, however one happened to come by, which swerved to avoid him. The woman in it ended up crashing and dying.

It still haunts my grandfather and he's 76 years old now. He still has nightmares, and is still thinking he should have been the one who died instead of that woman. He always hated roads. In his 30s he found a fishing village on a small island with no vehicles and lived there since. Nowadays, there are a few vehicles, mainly just pickup trucks, and some police cars and such. But way fewer than other areas.
