I would like to know the specifics regarding mp3 law (I know there is no such thing, I am referring to laws applying to the Mp3 situation)
As in, if I own the cd, AND downloaded the song, wouldn't it be just considered a backup? Rightly so, could I distribute this song on a burned cd without reprecussion? ETC.

As far as I understand it, you can have the mp3 on your computer if you own the CD. But you cannot distribute a copy of the CD or a CD with the mp3 burned on it. That would be a violation of copyright laws.
Modest Mouse used to be on a label called Up. In which case I wouldn't be surprised if the band saw a decent amount of money from record sales. They are now on Sony and probably get like a dollar for every CD sold. But it is still one dollar more than they would get if you download the entire CD yourself.
