Is it smart to fix my car with no experience even if its an easy job?

I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring and i need to replace the thermostat and thermostat gasket. Now i have been to a mechanic because of an antifreeze leak and they are saying that the housing needs to be replaced. And have priced the job from 200 - 300 bucks. I have looked all over the internet and i read a lot that its most likely the gasket is old and has chipped and now is causing the leak. the gasket costs 5 bucks...thermostat from 14-25 and sealant is another 5 bucks....total cost 35 bucks....do you see where im going..? I have too many bills to be just giving away money. Is changing a thermostat gasket really that difficult??? I can see everything. There are two screws...i know (think) i can do it...but is it smart?

If you are confident with a spanner and are used to taking things apart and getting them back together, sure have a go.

When it comes to cars, you have got to start somewhere.

Things to watch out for.
1, drain the coolant first.
2, make sure the engine hasn't been running recently, you would be surprised by how many folks burn themselves on a hot engine.
3, Be careful removing the bolts and housing. Alloy housings can break, don't try to prise the housing apart with any tool at the mating face, this can damage easily.
4, be prepared for some stubborn screws and bolts.
5, take care to avoid dropping anything into the water system when you have the lid off.
6, make sure you get rid of all of the old gasket before using a new one.
